YouTube Shorts Longer Than 60 Seconds: How the Three-Minute Limit Works
Since Oct 15, 2024, a vertical or square video up to 3 minutes counts as a Short. Here's how to post one, what happens to music, and when to stay short.

In this article
Yes, YouTube Shorts can now be up to 3 minutes long, since Oct 15, 2024, as long as the video is square or vertical. So a 3-minute vertical video counts as a Short. Videos uploaded before that date keep the 60-second limit.
That's the whole rule for YouTube Shorts longer than 60 seconds. What nobody spells out is when the extra time is worth using.
Is a 3-minute video a Short? The current limit
A 3-minute video is a Short when it's square or vertical, and a horizontal 16:9 video is never a Short, whatever its length. Export in 9:16 (1080×1920) and you're safe.
Two details trip people up. The change isn't retroactive: Shorts uploaded before Oct 15, 2024 stay at 60 seconds. And 3 minutes is a ceiling, not a target.
Does YouTube have 3-minute Shorts?
Yes. The maximum is 3 minutes for vertical or square uploads, and it's the same format as a classic Short in the Shorts player.
Can you make a 2-minute YouTube Short?
Yes. Anything from a few seconds up to 3:00 is valid, so 90 seconds, 2 minutes or 2:45 all work if the file is vertical or square.
How to post a Short longer than 60 seconds
There's no setting that removes the time limit; you upload a vertical or square video of 3 minutes or less, and YouTube treats it as a Short. That's identical on Android, iPhone and desktop.
The in-app Shorts camera is the shaky part. Its recording limits have changed over time, so check what your app version offers today. Uploading a finished file is the reliable route.
Upload, check the aspect ratio and confirm it appears as a Short
- Export 9:16 at 1080×1920, no longer than 3:00.
- In the YouTube app tap Create (+) and pick the file from your gallery, or upload in YouTube Studio on desktop.
- Check the preview is full vertical, then publish.
- Open the live video and confirm it plays in the vertical Shorts player.
If it doesn't show as a Short
Check the frame first. A vertical clip placed on a 16:9 canvas with black bars is a horizontal file, and it won't count. Then check the runtime: 3:01 is out.
We've also seen creators report longer Shorts sitting under the Videos tab instead of the Shorts tab in Studio. Judge by how it plays, not by the tab, and recheck the help page because this behavior has shifted.
If your source is 16:9, reframe it to vertical before exporting.
Music rules for 3-minute Shorts
Most songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short, but some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. That's from YouTube's own Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts help article, and it may change.
The practical result: music availability shrinks as length grows. A 2:30 Short built on a trending track may go silent or lose the song partway through.
To add music, pick a track from the Shorts audio library in the Shorts editor. For anything past 90 seconds, plan for original or properly licensed audio, or a voiceover over music you own. Don't try to dodge Content ID with pitch tricks. It doesn't hold up and it puts the channel at risk.
Old limits you may still see: 15 seconds, 60 seconds and daily limits
The 15-second and 60-second figures are history, not requirements. Shorts started with a 15-second cap, later moved to 60 seconds, and now reach 3 minutes for vertical or square video. There's no minimum length for a Short to exist.
For monetization, we won't quote a minimum length because the help page above doesn't state one. Check the YouTube Partner Program requirements on YouTube's own pages.
Daily limits: that same help page documents no fixed per-day cap on Shorts. New or unverified channels can face upload limits, though, so if uploads get blocked, look at the notice in Studio.
When a longer Short is worth it
Use 3 minutes only when the story needs the time and the retention graph holds; otherwise stay at 15 to 60 seconds. Length helps stories with a real turn, step-by-step demos, and podcast or stream moments that need setup to make sense. A single reaction or reveal doesn't. Extra seconds there are padding.
Cut length for clips from long video
These are our starting points, not YouTube rules:
| Clip type | Starting length |
|---|---|
| One-beat moment (reaction, reveal) | 15-40 seconds |
| Story with setup and turn | 45-90 seconds |
| Step-by-step or explained podcast moment | 90 seconds to 3 minutes |
When you're clipping an hour of footage, a tool like the WowReveal AI Clipper finds the best moments and renders them as 9:16, so producing a short and a long cut of the same moment takes minutes, not an evening.
A simple test: run one long and one short cut
Post both cuts of the same moment, then open the audience retention graph in YouTube Studio for each. Compare after the same time window.
If the long cut holds through the middle, the length is earning its place. If it drops hard in the first seconds, that's a hook problem, not a length problem. Either way, you're testing. Longer isn't a promise of better results.
Where to confirm the rules before you publish
Confirm the current maximum length, the aspect-ratio condition and the music limits on the YouTube Help Center page "Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts." It's the primary source, and the one that changes first.
For announcements, use the YouTube Creators hub and the Creator Insider updates. Platform rules change, so recheck before you build a posting schedule around any number in this article, including ours.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 3 minute video a Short?
Yes, if it's square or vertical and uploaded since Oct 15, 2024 with a runtime of 3:00 or less. A horizontal 16:9 video of the same length is a regular video.
How do I remove the time limit on YouTube Shorts?
You can't switch it off. The limit is 3 minutes, and the only condition is that the video is vertical or square. Anything longer, or any horizontal file, becomes a regular video.
Can I use any song in a 3-minute Short?
Not always. Most songs work for up to 90 seconds, and some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. For longer Shorts, use original or licensed audio.
