What Is a Clip vs a Short? The Difference Explained

Clip and short get used as synonyms, but they aren't the same thing. Here's the plain definition, a three-part test, and what a raw clip needs to become a short.

In this article

A clip is an excerpt cut from a longer video, in any format, while a short is a finished, vertical (9:16) short-form video packaged for feeds like YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels and TikTok. Every short can be built from a clip, but a clip is not automatically a short.

Key points

  • A clip is defined by where it comes from: a slice of a longer source.
  • A short is defined by what it is: a vertical, feed-ready, finished video.
  • Three things separate them: length, aspect ratio and packaging.
  • "Clip" is also the name of platform features, which are not shorts.

Clip vs short in one sentence

A clip is a piece of a video; a short is a product built for a feed. The clip is raw material. The short is what you actually post.

What is a clip?

A clip is any excerpt cut out of a longer video, with no fixed length, no required aspect ratio and no required polish. Take a 90-minute podcast and cut out the 45 seconds where the guest tells the best story. That cut is a clip, even if it's still 16:9 with no captions.

Clip vs full video

A clip is a video too, just a partial one. The difference is dependence: a full video stands alone, while a clip is defined by its parent. Cut the clip loose and add context, and it can become its own video.

Platform features also called 'clips'

Some platforms use "clip" for a built-in feature, and those are narrower than the general term. YouTube's Clips feature lets viewers share a short segment of a video by link, and Twitch clips capture a moment from a stream. Neither is a short. They're shareable excerpts, not vertical feed videos.

What makes a video a short?

A video is a short when it's vertical, fits the platform's length limit and is packaged to hold attention in a feed. YouTube's Shorts documentation covers the official format and length requirements. And the same idea applies on Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels and TikTok: different names, nearly identical format.

Limits differ per platform and change over time, so check current limits before you build to one.

Fail any one row and you have a clip, not a short. We've seen pages post raw 16:9 cuts with black bars and wonder why nobody watched past the first second.

What a clip needs to become a short

A clip becomes a short when you reframe it, trim it, and package it for the feed. In order:

  1. Reframe to 9:16, keeping the speaker or action centered.
  2. Trim to the platform's limit, and to the strongest beat.
  3. Open with a hook in the first 1-2 seconds.
  4. Add animated captions, since many people watch muted.
  5. Add a headline, a cover and music.
  6. Check rights. If you don't own the source or have permission, don't post it. And make sure the result adds something original, not just a re-upload.

Where AI fits in

AI speeds up two steps: finding the clip and finishing it. An AI Clipper scans a long video for the best moments, and tools like WowReveal then reframe to 9:16 and add captions, a headline, music and a cover. You still choose what's worth posting and confirm you have the rights.
